There’s been a bit of a mini crisis in Europe this week, as a referendum in Ireland rejected a new treaty between the EU member countries.

Naturally – in the way of all things that have ever been done by bureaucrats – the treaty that created the EU in the first place was a bit of a bodge-up and it doesn’t allow the European Union to progress from the point it’s at at the moment. Among other things, the current treaty limits the number of member countries to 27 – which has already been reached. That means countries like Croatia, which is hoping to become a member by 2011, wouldn’t be able to join. … Read more

On Friday i went to Southend, to meet up with a couple of old friends from Australia who’ve both been living in London for a few years now. Quite why anyone who could live in Australia would choose to live in London, i’m damned if i know – but there’s no accounting for taste!

Anyway, Phil and Brenton were going to Southend on Phil’s motorbike so Brenton could buy a bike there himself. I guess a motorbike’s the smart way to get around London these days, with the prices of petrol and public transport the way they are. I worked a full day on Saturday – it was my first full day’s paid work in over 6 months now. I went to the Weald Show with a couple of other Essex Hog Roasts workers and a couple of roast pigs. We were operating a stall selling “hog roast baps” – pig rolls, in other words.

Personally, the idea of eating chunks of roast pig between two bits of bread makes me think “yuk!”, but i was being paid to sell it, not to eat it, so i wasn’t bothered by that! … Read more

The weather’s finally been good enough to go for a swim in the river. It’s not exactly warm in the water, but it’s pleasant enough.
